The Baton Rouge Area Chamber has endorsed the four bills pertaining to school board reform sponsored by Baton Rouge Republican Rep. Steve Carter. House Bill 664 would establish term limits for school board members, HB 808 changes board member pay and health benefits, HB 371 addresses nepotism in regards to school and system workers, and HB 851 seeks to keep boards out of the day-to-day management of schools. The chamber says the changes are representative of best practices in other states. Carter’s bills mirror the recommendations made by state Education Superintendent Paul Pastorek, who is pushing to put more power over local schools in the hands of superintendents.
