Republican groups trying to widen substantially their margin of support in the House fell short, while Democrats showed they could still win legislative races in Louisiana despite growing trends to the GOP. Those are among the outcomes of Saturday’s runoff elections. Depending on where they started counting, both Republicans and Democrats are declaring victory. The House will have 58 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents when new terms begin in January. The Senate will have 24 Republicans and 15 Democrats. Democrats retained the same number of House seats after the October and November elections, despite millions spent by Republican leaders to gain seats. But Republicans have greatly increased clout in the House and Senate since the start of the last term and will maintain the majorities in both chambers.
