Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco will make her first public appearance this weekend since being diagnosed with and treated for a rare eye cancer. Blanco is scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Louisiana Democratic Party at its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner on Saturday. Blanco announced last month that she was diagnosed with cancer, called choroidal melanoma, which affects about six in one million people. She has said her prognosis for recovery is good. Blanco served as governor from 2004 to 2008, the first woman to hold the post in Louisiana history. She was lieutenant governor for two terms before that and had been a state lawmaker. Since leaving office, Blanco has been working on her autobiography.
