Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco has been diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. Doctors found Blanco has choroidal melanoma, which affects roughly six out of 1 million people, during a comprehensive eye exam last week. Blanco, 68, expects to begin treatment for the cancer shortly. She’s in good health and her prognosis is favorable, according to a statement sent out by her spokeswoman, Marie Centanni. Blanco, who served as lieutenant governor from 1996 to 2004, was the first woman elected governor of the state, an office she held from 2004 to 2008.
