The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is discussing how it intends to roll out a new law that ties teacher evaluations to student performance scores. Public school teachers will have half their review pegged to student performance data—not the flat standardized test scores, but the growth in student achievement on those tests. BESE was considering today how to set the scoring standards statewide, to comply with the law passed two years ago and started with a pilot program. The law, championed by Gov. Bobby Jindal, has drawn complaints from teacher unions, which call the evaluation change unfair and say standardized tests can’t adequately measure the effectiveness of a teacher. Supporters say the data-driven evaluations will do away with complaints about subjectivity in the reviews.
