Louisiana’s top school board has backed a reworking of the state’s method for determining whether private and parochial schools should be eligible for public funding. A BESE committee today agreed to the changes proposed by Superintendent of Education John White. The committee approval came with support of a majority of BESE members, with a final vote planned for Wednesday. The state’s process for judging private schools has drawn new attention to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s voucher program. The changes will give automatic approval to those schools that achieve national accreditation standards and cut down on paperwork for schools accredited by other third-party organizations. Two BESE members voted against the changes: Lottie Beebe of Breaux Bridge and Carolyn Hill of Baton Rouge.
