The state education board is backing a third year of standstill funding for Louisiana’s public school districts. A majority of the 11-member Board of Elementary and Secondary Education agreed today to the $3.3 billion funding formula for the 2011-12 school year. A second and final vote is expected tomorrow to send the proposal to lawmakers. The recommendation would maintain the current level of funding for the 70 school districts and keep them free of cuts—but wouldn’t give them an increase, such as they received in other years. The formula distributes dollars to districts based on the number and type of students they have and on the relative wealth of each district. Lawmakers will consider the proposal in the regular session that begins in April. They can approve or reject the funding formula, but cannot change it.
