Editor’s note: This story has been changed since its original publication. An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Robert Munson’s company as The Munson Group and said he would oversee the Southern operations for SSG Sports. Munson’s company is M3 Communications, and he will serve as executive director of SSG throughout the country. Daily Report regrets the error.
Baton Rouge business, politics and sports strategist Robert Munson is partnering with Washington D.C.-based Sanderson Strategies Group to launch a new dedicated sports division called SSG Sports.
Munson will serve as senior advisor and executive director of sports operations for the new sports division in Sanderson Strategies Group. He will also continue to work for his own firm, M3 Communications.
SSG Sports will offer services including brand and reputation positions, crisis management and communications, media training and relations, public issue campaigns and charitable planning. Clients will include sports leagues, municipalities, universities, ownership groups, professional and collegiate team executives, coaches and athletes.
“Some of my clients and I have been together for a dozen years or more. That’s not going to change,” Munson says in a news release. “This new partnership gives me another outlet for my work, a national presence, and the chance to collaborate with the best collection of strategic minds in the business.”
Munson has 18 years of experience as a strategist, notes SSG President Len Sanderson, a Louisiana native and the first chief of staff for former Gov. Buddy Roemer.
“His understanding of communications coupled with his ability to translate complex information into compelling and accessible stories connecting brands and audiences, greatly expand SSG’s capacity to personally represent the interests of all our clients—sports and non-sports—and their public positions,” says Sanderson.
Denise Michaels, an executive with SSG for 17 years and former public relations officer for Major League Baseball, will lead the new sports division as senior vice president and chief of sports strategy.
“Obviously, I love have a permanent presence in Louisiana,” she says. “I consider it home to some of the best athletes and sports organizations around.”
