Louisiana Senate President Pro Tempore and Baton Rouge mayoral hopeful Sharon Weston Broome, D-Baton Rouge, is among 24 women across the United States included in the 2015 Women in Government Leadership Program.

The program is an initiative of the Governing Institute, which is an offshoot of Governing, a Washington D.C.-based monthly magazine. The 24 women in the program’s inaugural class are elected and appointed officials from state and local governments across the country. The group includes Democrats and Republicans from 19 different states.

As the magazine details in its feature on Broome, she didn’t think Baton Rouge would be permanent stop for her when she moved here from Chicago after graduating from college.

“But how wrong she was,” reads the profile. “Today, Broome is a fixture in Baton Rouge politics. Since her election to the Louisiana Legislature in 1991, she has earned a reputation as a premier leader, becoming the first female speaker pro tem of the Louisiana House.”

Facing term limits in the House, she successfully jumped in 2004 to the Senate, where she serves as president pro tem. Term limited once again, she’s now running for Baton Rouge mayor in the fall 2016 election.
