Baton Rouge lost more jobs than any of Louisiana’s other metropolitan statistical areas in the May, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
The commission reports that the region lost 3,900 jobs over the month, despite having gained 6,700 jobs over the year.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the seasonally-adjusted data comes from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics and was released today.
The data also shows that Louisiana’s unemployment rate of 6.3% was unchanged in May, from both the previous month and when compared year to year.
Louisiana added just 569 individuals to the labor force, the commission says. There were 590 more individuals employed in May and 21 fewer individuals without a job who were actively seeking one.
The commission says the mining and logging sector continued to decline, with 17 consecutive months of both over-the-month and over-the-year job losses.
“The Louisiana Workforce Commission and our partners across the state are working tirelessly to connect Louisianans to family-sustaining careers,” Ava Dejoie, LWC executive director, says in a statement, adding that job-seekers are encouraged to take advantage of the agency’s Helping Individuals Reach Employment system, where more 9,000 job openings are listed.
