Baton Rouge Gallery, LASM debut new exhibits

The Baton Rouge Gallery has opened its September exhibition, featuring the works of gallery members Charles Barbier, Leanne McClurg Cambric, Scott Finch and Preston Gilchrist. Gallery visitors will be treated to Barbier’s playful and thought-provoking carnival scenes, Finch’s latest culturally roving endeavors, Gilchrist’s dialogue-inciting encaustic paintings and Cambric’s ceramic celebration of the “fable of birds.” The exhibit will be free and open to the public from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, until it concludes Sept. 29. And don’t miss the opening reception Wednesday, from 7-9 p.m., at which you can enjoy free hors d’oeuvres and drinks while you view the artwork. For more details, go to batonrougegallery.org. The Louisiana Art and Science Museum teams up with the American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank for the unique design and building competition, Can-Struction. Teams from area design, building and business firms have built fanciful sculptures made entirely of cans of food and other nonperishable food items. After the display closes, all food will be donated to the food bank. The exhibit will be on display from Saturday through Sept. 18. For more details, go to lasm.org. And the LSU’s Theatre Lab Season opens with the powerful Greek tragedy Electra, starting its run Tuesday at the LSU Studio Theatre. This drama by Sophocles explores a complex web of religion, royals, relationships and revenge as two families struggle over the throne of the city of Argos.
