There were 1,900 fewer jobs in metro Baton Rouge in June than there were a year ago, according to figures released today by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. According to seasonally unadjusted figures, there were 363,200 total non-farm jobs in the Capital Region in June, compared with 365,100 in June 2010. The local decrease was caused by a drop in the number of construction, government and goods-producing jobs.
The state recorded 11,600 more non-farm jobs last month than in June 2010, going from nearly 1.9 million to 1.91 million. New Orleans and Alexandria were tied for the largest number of new jobs over the year, with 2,900 each, followed by Lake Charles, with 2,300. Other than Baton Rouge, Monroe was the only other metro area in Louisiana to lose jobs over the year, shedding 100 positions. Statewide unemployment held at 8.1%, slightly better than the Baton Rouge metro average of 8.4%.
