There were 900 fewer jobs in metro Baton Rouge in May than there were a year ago, according to figures released today by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. According to seasonally unadjusted figures, there were 365,000 total nonfarm jobs in the Capital Region in May, compared with 365,900 in May 2010. The local decrease was caused by a drop in the number of service and government jobs.

The state recorded 15,000 more nonfarm jobs last month than in May 2010, going from nearly 1.9 million to 1.91 million. New Orleans had the largest number of new jobs over the year, with 4,900, followed by Shreveport-Bossier City with 4,800. Statewide unemployment was at 8.1%, while the Baton Rouge metro average was slightly worse at 8.4%.
