The Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge is branching out into broadcasting with the launch of a new radio station: The Mighty WSGX 95.1 FM.
The new station—which will feature a format of news, conservative talk, and music from the 1950s-1970s—is a nonprofit, meaning it won’t sell commercial airtime and will instead be supported through corporate sponsorships and private donations. Chamber President Woody Jenkins is helping to launch the station. The former state lawmaker and publisher of several publications, including Capital City News and Central City News, says the station will fill a void in the local broadcasting community.
“We’ve been talking about this at the chamber for a while now and this is just really something we want to do,” says Jenkins. “There’s really nothing else like it here.”
Jenkins says volunteers will staff the station, and that veteran broadcaster Bob Furlow—who hired Jenkins as a deejay on WLCS-AM 910 in 1964—has also been instrumental in helping get the station off the ground. It is scheduled to go on the air in June. The East Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce is not affiliated with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.
