Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon has picked up another challenge to his fall re-election bid.

The Associated Press reports Charlotte McDaniel McGehee, a Democrat and lawyer from Baton Rouge, announced her candidacy this week. In a statement, McGehee describes herself as a business owner and working mother who knows “the challenges our families face.”

Donelon, a Republican former state lawmaker from Jefferson Parish, has been insurance commissioner since 2006. He has drawn a GOP opponent as well in Matt Parker, a car repair business owner from West Monroe.

In the most recent round of campaign finance reports, Donelon had nearly $543,000 in his campaign account. Parker reported just under $27,000 cash on hand. McGehee hasn’t yet filed a campaign finance report.

The election is Oct. 24. If no single candidate garners more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will be held with the top two candidates on Nov. 21.

McGehee is the second Baton Rouge attorney to announce a possible run for public office this week. As reported on Monday, Jennifer Treadway is preparing a campaign to run for state treasurer this fall.
