Passenger counts were up about 2.4% at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport in May, the airport says in a news release.

The latest stats show a total of 69,661 passengers moving in and out of BTR during the month. Year-to-date, a total of 311,670 travelers—a roughly 3.1% increase—have visited the airport.

Airport officials attribute the increase in airport traffic to additional seating capacity on American and United airlines, both of which scheduled larger, dual-class aircraft to arrive and take off from BTR.

The airport says the move increased American Airlines’ share of passengers at the airport to 38%. Delta also captures 38% of BTR passengers, and United captures 24%.

“We’re pleased that the community is helping support the additional seating capacity at BTR,” Ralph Hennessy, BTR interim director of aviation, says in a statement. “Community support is the biggest factor in determining our air service.”

BTR says its May passenger count is the second highest among commercial airports in Louisiana and the immediate Gulf region.
