McKinley Middle Magnet School in Baton Rouge is one of just five Louisiana schools—and 269 across the country—being recognized today as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School based on its overall academic excellence and progress in improving student academic achievement levels. The U.S. Department of Education will honor McKinley and other 2012 National Blue Ribbon schools at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in November. In its 30-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this coveted award on nearly 7,000 of America’s schools. Since 1983, nine East Baton Rouge Parish public schools have been awarded the honor. This is McKinley’s second time to be named to the list. Other Louisiana schools on the list this year are: Claiborne Fundamental Elementary Magnet School and Oak Park Microsociety Elementary School, both in Shreveport; Gretna No. 2 Academy for Advanced Studies in Gretna; and T. S. Cooley Elementary Magnet School in Lake Charles. You can check out the complete list of all 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools here, and read more about McKinley’s inclusion on the list from the EBR school system here.
