The Baton Rouge metro area jumped 34 spots up the 2011 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index released today, to No. 83 among the nation’s 190 largest cities. While Louisiana at large jumped six spots in the 2011 index to No. 36, its residents are still among the fattest in the country and it is home to the fourth-highest obesity rate, 30.3%. While Baton Rougeans got better marks this year for emotional health and work environment in the index, the city’s physical health and basic access scores were worse than in 2010. The Lafayette metro area is ranked as the No. 21 healthiest metro in the nation, while Shreveport/Bossier City is ranked No. 40—a jump of 138 spots from the 2010 index—and New Orleans slipped 38 spots to No. 147.
