Among the 100 largest metro areas in the nation, Baton Rouge ranks No. 7 for job growth through 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Aside from Texas metros El Paso (No. 5) and San Antonio-New Braunfels (No. 10), Baton Rouge is the only Southern city in the top 10. The Atlantic—which has detailed coverage of the ranking and the full list here—is skeptical of the projections. “Could these predictions be wrong? Of course. They probably will be, in fact,” the magazine says. “The BLS experts are forecasters, not psychics: some industries will grow faster nationally than they predict, and others will fall short. Weather, education or density could matter more or less this decade than last decade. And surely there will be unpredictable factors that affect individual metros: even events far less dramatic than Hurricane Katrina can throw a city off its growth path.”
