Baton Rouge had the 10th-highest income inequality rate in the country from 2005 to 2009, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report. New Orleans ranked second on the list, behind Atlanta. Following New Orleans on the list, in order, are Washington, D.C., Miami, Gainesville, Fla., Athens, Ga., New York City, Fort Lauderdale, Dallas and Baton Rouge. The report, which is available in its entirety here, notes that aside from Atlanta, every other city on the top ten list has essentially the same income inequality “except that the (rate) for New Orleans is higher than that for Dallas and Baton Rouge.” The report considered 269 areas with populations exceeding 100,000 or more.
