B.R. construction employment down 3% on the year

The Baton Rouge area lost 1,000 construction jobs over the past year, according to new data by the Associated General Contractors of America, placing it 223rd on a list of 337 metro areas across the country. In August, there were 36,900 construction jobs in the area, compared to 37,900 in August 2010, a 3% decline. Houma, Lafayette and Shreveport-Bossier City all saw a 3% increase on the year, and they’re all tied at No. 93 on the list. New Orleans saw a 1% increase since last year, to 30,400 jobs in August, landing it 134th on the list. Lafayette was the only other Louisiana metro area to see job losses, with a 5% decrease and 6,000 total jobs in August, placing it 263rd. Statewide, the construction industry added 1,800 jobs over the past year, to 124,100 total, a 1% gain. Nationwide, 146 of 337 metro areas added jobs between August 2010 and August 2011, 145 saw job losses and 46 stayed level. See the complete AGC monthly report here.
