Area auto dealers say sales have improved after one of the worst sales drops in recent memory and consumer anxiety over a federal bailout for the auto industry. “We’re seeing more traffic,” says Wayne Pevito, who is manager of the Brian Harris Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership on Airline Highway. “I don’t see a big recession here in the Baton Rouge area.” Pevito anticipates better sales by mid-year, particularly as the credit crunch eases. Dealers are gearing up with survival strategies this year such as smaller, but more popular inventories, more strategic advertising and heavier promotions. The move comes after sales fell anywhere from 10% to 60% late last year from record gas prices, the credit crunch, a presidential election year and daily media reports on the recession. Jim Swanson, general manager of Graves Chevrolet in Baker, says the dealership is starting the year with a leaner inventory, but sales have improved over the 50% drop experienced over the last few months. At Duplessis Cadillac, General Manager Cal Liggett says sales have improved, aided by strong promotions and federal support for the industry. Liggett cautiously projects a 15% sales increase at the dealership, aided by more focused advertising and a leaner inventory with broader appeal.—Anna Thibodeaux
