AT&T is continuing to aggressively expanding its fiber footprint in Louisiana.

On Thursday, the company announced AT&T Business Fiber to give more businesses operating in Baton Rouge, Denham Springs and 22 other Louisiana communities access to download and upload speeds of one gigabit per second.

“For many years, elected officials in Baton Rouge and across the state have pursued policies that invite investment, and these policies have allowed AT&T to provided gigabit and multi-gigabit connections to businesses across Louisiana for more than a decade, helping to spur business success and job creation,” says Sonia Perez, president of AT&T Louisiana. “With AT&T Business Fiber being deployed to many multi-tenant office buildings across the state, we are quickly expanding the number of businesses in urban and rural areas alike that have access to gigabit connections.”

The company has 230 multitenant office buildings that are live with AT&T Business Fiber, which allows businesses to download 8,000 word processing documents in one second, download a two-hour high definition video in 36 seconds, and backup and restore a one terabyte hard drive in 2.5 hours.

Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson calls high-speed, fiber-optic connectivity for business “a sound investment for the future” in a statement.

“The greater speed at which our business providers can deliver data services, the better our ability will be to compete in the global economy,” he says.

To that end, the Baton Rouge Metro Council recently approved a contract to hire Columbia Telecommunications Corp., of Maryland, to determine the best strategy to implement a parishwide strategy for high-speed broad Internet.

The study should be completed by the end of the year.
