A Save-A-Lot grocery store is set to fill the space in the Brookwood Village Shopping Center on Plank Road that was formerly home to Winn-Dixie and has been vacant for about a decade.
Permits filed in East Baton Rouge Parish show Westwego-based Legette Construction will renovate the 16,317-square-foot building at 12250 Plank Road that anchors the shopping center, which is located at the intersection of Plank and Comite Drive.
The Winn-Dixie location there was one of hundreds that closed throughout the country when the company filed for bankruptcy in 2005. The renovation of the space is expected to cost about $125,000, according to the permit application, and will include changes to the front of the store to accommodate a new grocery cart storage area.
Chon Tomlin, a representative with Save-A-Lot, says the company is in the early stages of renovations and no projected opening date has been set yet. The store will be owned by an independent licensee, Tomlin says.
The Plank Road location will be the third Save-A-Lot in Baton Rouge, with other locations at 5907 Florida Blvd. and 5186 Evangeline St. It will be located next to a Rite-Aid pharmacy in the shopping center, while Pizza Hut and Circle K sit as outparcels on the property.
Save-A-Lot, a subsidiary of SuperValu, has more than 1,300 stores nationwide. The chain began as a single store in Cahokia, Illinois, in 1977 and was founded by Bill Moran. SuperValu is based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and owns more than 3,400 grocery stores across the country.
