State Rep. Terry Landry, the former head of Louisiana State Police, and New Orleans Rep. Helena Moreno plan to propose an assault rifle ban in Louisiana, The USA Today Network reports.
Landry is partnering with Moreno to draft a bill for the upcoming regular legislative session, in the wake of the Florida school shooting that left 17 dead and has reignited a national debate about gun control. Moreno is leaving the Legislature for her seat on the New Orleans City Council before the upcoming regular session ends. Both Landry and Moreno are Democrats.
“I have no expectation of it passing, but people need to be on the record,” Landry, a 27-year veteran of state police and a four-year superintendent of the agency, tells the USA Today Network.
Landry says the proposed ban is in part out of concern for fellow officers, asking whether they should be “outgunned.” The bill is unlikely to pass, with a GOP-dominated Legislature and pro-gun Democrat in the governor’s office.
