Kean’s to close eight Baton Rouge area dry cleaning locations

Baton Rouge-based Kean’s Fine Dry Cleaning is closing eight underperforming locations throughout Baton Rouge—more than half the number of its stores in the Capital Region—citing slow sales due to the rise in popularity of casual business attire, among other factors.

“We have also felt the impact of a labor shortage and implementation of health care reform over the past year, which has propelled us to move forward with this decision,” Kean’s says in a news release issued this morning.

While Kean’s will have just six locations remaining in Baton Rouge following the closures, it says the stores being shuttered account for less than one-third of its total sales.

The following locations will close on Friday, Oct. 9: 140 Sharp Road; 311 South Burnside Ave., 8178 Plank Road and 439 Ninth St. Four other stores at 218 Staring Lane, 4665 Perkins Road, 14505 La. 44 in Gonzales, and 4556 Government St.—which just opened last month—will close on Monday. Customers with clothing at the latter four will be able to retrieve it at the nearest Kean’s location, according to the company.

“As Baton Rouge has shifted and changed through the years, Kean’s has made an attempt to remain in many of these locations,” the company says. “However, due to ‘wash and wear,’ as well as more casual business attire, the volume in these locations does not justify our presence any longer.”

Kean’s, which is celebrating 115 years in business this year, says it is still moving forward with plans for a location in the Highland Park development near Alexander’s Highland Market. The location was announced in late 2013. Kean’s will have six local locations following the eight closures.
