Baton Rouge-based Cellcontrol says its DriveID technology can stop Pokémon Go players from playing the augmented reality game while driving.
“You’re already seeing crashes as a result of people playing the game while driving,” Cellcontrol CEO Robert Guba says in a statement. “We are all for people enjoying the games and apps on their smartphones, but we want to make sure they do so in the safest, smartest way possible.”
Guba says the company’s DriveID software, which keeps drivers from being distracted by texting, emails and various social media programs, can also be applied to Pokémon Go.
“Sending one more text, viewing that last SnapChat, and now searching for the next Pokéstop behind the wheel can cost people their lives,” Guba says.
Launched in early 2014, DriveID has received national accolades for making the roads safer from distracted driving. The firm was awarded a Consumer Electronics Show Innovations Design and Engineering Award honoree for DriveID in 2014.
Users of DriveID can decide which applications and phone numbers they want to allow for the driver or choose to block the entire vehicle. The software also gives insight into the driver performs behind the wheel. Parents and fleet managers can get reports on driving behavior.
