Capital Region home sales rose for the fifth straight month in October, reversing five months of declines at the start of 2011 and placing this year’s figures on track to narrowly eclipse 2010 sales. A total of 513 homes were sold in October, compared to 465 a year ago—a 10.3% increase. Year-to-date home sales stood at 5,604 at the end of October, a modest 1.2% increase over the 5,533 year-to-date sales in 2010. Nonetheless, it’s a much rosier picture than at the end of May, when year-to-date sales were down 16% and the region had experienced five months of declines. The average home sold went for approximately $194,000 in October, up from an average last October of roughly $188,500. Sales in East Baton Rouge Parish led the regional increase in October, up to 286 from 218 a year ago. Ascension Parish saw 117 sales, compared to 100 in 2010. Sales in Livingston Parish were down by 20 on the year, to 69 total in October.
