The value of building permits issued in East Baton Rouge Parish was down nearly 20% in April compared to the year before. According to the city-parish Department of Public Works’ Inspection Division, the value of projects permitted in the parish during the month was nearly $37.4 million, compared with nearly $47.7 million in April 2010. The biggest commercial project permitted this month is the $5 million Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores, under construction in Siegen Marketplace. Residential construction was well ahead of the 2010 pace, with $25.2 million in projects permitted during April, compared with $15 million the year before. Through the first four months of 2011, the value of all permits is running slightly behind that of 2010, at $146.2 million compared to $149.2 million. Residential construction is up over the same period, from $50.6 million last year to $62.7 million.
