Application process opens for new early childhood education program

The Louisiana Department of Education and Family Services and the Department of Health and Hospitals today began taking applications from school districts and others who want to take part in a pilot program aimed at overhauling pre-kindergarten care and education. “Currently, only half of Louisiana’s children enter kindergarten ready to learn,” says LDOE Superintendent John White in a prepared statement. “This reality is unacceptable and must be addressed.” The Early Childhood Care and Education Network program invites school districts, childcare providers, Head Start programs, and other stakeholders within the community to work together to provide early childhood services. The network will be fully implemented in the fall of 2015, the department says. The pilot program is tied to “Louisiana Believes,” the state’s plan to ensure that every child gets on track to a college degree or professional career. Those picked to take part are eligible for up to $350,000 over two years. The deadline to apply is March 22, and those selected to participate will be notified on April 12.
