NEW IBERIA (AP) — Acadiana Regional Airport’s seaway—a 5,000-foot runway for float planes and helicopters—is back open after months of work to fix two leaks.

The seaway, built in 1997 and billed as the only one of its kind in the lower 48 states, reopened Monday.

Repairs were expected to cost $50,000 to $100,000 when the leaks were found in July, but engineer Ted Habetz of Berard, Habetz and Associates said the final cost was less than $29,000. The state Department of Transportation and Development will cover half the cost.

Habetz says other potential weak spots were inspected and found in good condition.

Airport Director Jason Devilier said he advised the Sea Plane Pilots Association that the seaway is open again.
