Based on the reports this afternoon from 79 companies exploring for oil and natural gas in the Gulf of Mexico, 93% of oil production and 67% of natural gas production have been shut in because of Hurricane Isaac, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement says. As a safety precaution, a total of 503 manned production platforms have been evacuated. That’s 157 more than had been evacuated as of Monday afternoon, and it represents 84% of the 596 total such platforms, according to BSEE. Meanwhile, just eight more drilling rigs were evacuated between Monday afternoon and today. A total of 49 rigs were evacuated as of this afternoon, or 64% of the 76 currently drilling in the Gulf. Unlike drilling rigs, which typically move from location to location, production facilities remain in the same location throughout a project’s duration.
