Hundreds of employees at a Florida Boulevard call center face the prospect of being laid off after Convergys Corp. announced today it’s closing its Baton Rouge operations in May. “The closure will affect more than 300 employees,” reads a short statement from the company on the closure. “Convergys is working to determine the availability of work-at-home positions for employees impacted by this decision. Employees in good standing also may pursue job openings at other Convergys locations. In addition, Convergys will provide professional support through its Employee Assistance Program.” Convergys has no other call centers in Louisiana. The Cincinnati-based company came to Baton Rouge in August 2000, opening a call center at the refurbished site of the former Bon Marche Shopping Center. The company initially employed an estimated 900 workers, but the numbers have fluctuated up and down since.
