The scene of cartoon characters, cult classic films, and pop-inspired works of mind-bending imagination, the Baton Rouge Gallery’s Surreal Salon Soiree seeks to weave pop surrealism and lowbrow art into Capital City culture. The event Saturday night brings together wild costumes, live music, interactive exhibits and a juried show. The fifth annual soiree will feature a performance by The New Orleans Bingo! Show, music by local electronic musician Matt Cee, a multimedia installation by Elevator Projects, and performances by contemporary dance group Of Moving Colors. Guests are encouraged to participate in the surrealism-inspired costume contest to celebrate the show and the artists’ work. The fun lasts from 7 to 11 p.m; tickets range from $17 to $22 in advance, $20 to $25 at the door. Also this week, the first of Baton Rouge’s Mardi Gras parades gets rolling, and original theatrical productions hit local stages. Find out more in the new 225 Weekender e-newsletter here.
