As 225 Weekender reports, a fairy tale from Russia gets a Louisiana update when the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre presents its production of The Nutcracker: A Tale from the Bayou this weekend at the Baton Rouge River Center Theater.

The show puts the plot of the original play in a Louisiana setting, with sets modeled after Nottoway and Oak Alley plantations, as the story is told of Clara’s Christmas dreams. This year’s performance includes professional guests artists Le’Brian Patrick, Meredith Broussard, Carlos Lopez and Alison Storming. Showtimes are 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., both on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $26.85.

This weekend also marks the start of ice skating at the River Center, with a free opening night on Friday. Beginning Saturday, general admission tickets are $12. Group rates are available. Ice skating sessions run through Sunday, Jan. 4, at the River Center. There will be no sessions on Christmas and New Year’s.
