When most people think of ice cream, cornbread, goat cheese and sweet corn are not the first flavors that come to mind. But as 225 Dine reports, a local artisan ice cream company is serving up such made-to-order flavors.
La Mode Southern Craft Ice Cream can only be purchased online for now, but owner Jennifer Hardy has plans to turn her home-based business into a brick and mortar shop.
La Mode is sold in 12-packs of four-ounce cups, pints or half gallons. Harding tells 225 Dine that she makes her ice cream in small batches with available flavors that change every couple weeks.
While she can make a classic vanilla or chocolate, her favorite thing is creating ice cream flavors that are more outside of the box. “I like to play with flavors that are unexpected in ice cream,” says Hardy.
While she searches for a brick-and-mortar location, Hardy is making appearances at pop-up events throughout the city and La Mode had its own booth at this month’s Ogden Park Prowl. The ice cream company will be a part of the Oct. 5 Barbers and Blues event at Mercer Supply Co., 1010 Nicholson Drive East.
Making ice cream has been a longtime hobby for Hardy. After living in the San Francisco Bay area for about a decade, she became inspired by the city’s food.
After moving back to Baton Rouge, she says opening her own artisan shop felt attainable. Hardy pays homage to her roots by creating flavors that represent the Southern region. Her flavors include cornbread and cream, goat cheese and honeycomb, and sweet corn and blackberry. This fall, she plans on experimenting with new flavors such as pumpkin spice, caramel and sweet potato.
