While the rest of the country might be making good on New Year’s resolutions with plenty of diet and exercise, Louisiana has just welcomed the arrival of one of its most celebrated seasons: Mardi Gras. With it comes king cake.
The Capital City is no slouch when it comes to its selection of this treasured treat. And as 225 Dine highlights in its new guide to the area’s go-to choices for the coveted confectionary, a Capital City staple is the Calandro’s special, which is now being offered at both Baton Rouge locations. The special style is a vanilla king cake with cream cheese, pecans and coconut. If that’s not your thing, the store is also offering up to 50 options of fillings and flavors.
Another local favorite is Nannette Mayhall’s rich, cream cheese-based king cakes, which the in-home baker has been offering up for nearly three decades. If you’re looking for a not-so traditional take, Tiger Deaux-nuts is selling its maple bacon king cake. And Gourmet Girls, a catering company located near the Perkins Road overpass, is also once again doing its ever-popular king cake cupcakes.
