In anticipation of today’s opening of the Iverstine Farms Butcher shop at 4765 Perkins Road, owner Galen Iverstine gave 225 Dine a sneak peak at the family farms first brick-and-mortar location.
“The shop space is a beauty, with wood accents everywhere you look, and a gorgeous hand-painted wall adorned with illustrations of the farm’s animals and the sleek Iverstine logo,” 225 Dine writes.
The Iverstine family has had a strong presence in the Baton Rouge area since beginning their Kentwood farm six years ago. The family sells humanely raised meat every Saturday at the Red Stick Farmer’s Market, but the shop provides another way to get the product to customers.
“The number one phone call I get every week is, ‘How can I get your product?’” Iverstine tells 225 Dine. “Doing this, we’re able to customize the cuts better for the customer, and we’re also able to use 100% of the animal now, which is respecting the entire value of the animal and is more efficient and more sustainable.”
Fresh farm meat, from turkey and chicken to beef and hog, will fill display cases. Informational cards near each cut will advise customers the best way to cook the meat. A smokehouse is located in the back.
In the near future, the shop will be serving up house-made, grab-and-go sandwiches and boudin sausages, as well as beer, wine, seasonings and other local products.
