With historic flooding impacting Baton Rouge and neighboring cities, local restaurants have instigated their own efforts to feed evacuees and collect donations to assist with flood relief, 225 Dine reports.
The Overpass Merchant, 2904 Perkins Road, is offering a free lunch or dinner to anyone directly impacted by the flood. Also, all weekly lunch plates are $5 with the donation of nonperishable foods, pet food, diapers, blankets, cleaning supplies or clothing.
The restaurant also helped plan the “Fundraising Under the Overpass” event taking place from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
For $25 dollars and a donation, diners can try food from restaurants including The Overpass Merchant, Barcadia, Ivar’s Sports Bar, The Cajun Spoon, The Kolache Kitchen, Barbosa’s Barbecue, Robear Lane, Jax Brewhouse, Pelican House and Galatoire’s Bistro, as well as beer from regional breweries.
The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, which took in four feet of water at its South Choctaw Drive headquarters, is accepting cash donations to first buy supplies directly for victims and then to begin replenishing its stock of nonperishable foods lost in the flood.
Tio Javi’s, 4738 Constitution Ave, is serving as a drop-off location for donations. It’s also pre-sorting and delivering donations to shelters and evacuees in hotels on Constitution Avenue near the restaurant. The restaurant is also donating proceeds from some liquor sales, courtesy of donations from Avion Tequila, to buy toiletries for flood victims.
Tin Roof Brewing at 1624 Wyoming St. is collecting donations in the form of bottled water, clothing, baby supplies, pet supplies, toiletries, and canned and dry foods. Additionally, the brewery donated $1 from every pint purchased from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday to flood relief. It is continued its fundraising efforts Wednesday with 20% of sales 5-9 p.m. going to victims.
City Pork Deli & Charcuterie is also serving as a drop-off station for donations, and City Pork Kitchen & Pie teamed up with Woodlawn High School and Barbosa’s Barbecue to provide lunches to flood victims Tuesday.
