In an effort to relieve traffic congestion in the Capital Region, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced today that the state has officially begun work on a project to widen Interstate 10 from Highland Road in Baton Rouge to La. 73 in Ascension Parish.
The project calls for widening I-10 from the existing four-lane structure to a six-lane freeway along the roughly seven-mile stretch.
With the support of the Joint Transportation Committee, the state Department of Transportation and Development is set to begin a design-build solicitation for the project, Edwards’ office announced this afternoon in a news release.
The project is expected to help relieve traffic in the chronically gridlocked Baton Rouge area.
“Design-build authority and leadership that can incorporate federal and state policy to our advantage can deliver big, meaningful projects for the state,” Edwards says in a news release. “This is only the beginning of what we can do together.”
