Louisiana Nursery has purchased four acres of land near the intersection of Juban Road and U.S. 190 in Denham Springs as it considers expanding to Livingston Parish.
“We don’t know what exactly we’re going to build or when we’re going to build it,” says owner and president Mitch Mayes. “Most likely, we’ll build some type of store there, either seasonal or year-round, but we could also sell the property.”
The Baton Rouge-based company has three locations: two in Baton Rouge, on Coursey Boulevard and Perkins Road, and one in Prairieville, off La. 42. Louisiana Nursery would bring fresh competition to Denham Springs, joining Clegg’s Nursery, which has long dominated the market.
“I’m good friends with the Clegg’s guys—we’re friendly competitors,” Mayes says. “It’s just an important market we want to tap into.”
The land purchase comes as the nursery is also in the process of building another year-round store in Prairieville, with construction set to begin in June and a planned opening next spring. Mayes says he will make a decision about the Denham Springs site after the new Prairieville store opens next year.
