GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, are in Baton Rouge today to tour flood-damaged neighborhoods.
The Associated Press reports the two arrived this morning at the Baton Rouge airport and were met on the tarmac by Republicans Rep. Steve Scalise, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and Attorney General Jeff Landry.
Trump, wearing his signature “Make America Great Again” hat, shook hands briefly with the officials before heading to the motorcade. His running mate took a separate flight to Baton Rouge that landed earlier in the morning and he also met Trump at the airport and planned to join on the tour.
Trump’s visit comes as his campaign continued to shake up its top ranks. The campaign released a statement this morning saying chairman Paul Manafort has resigned.
Details on what Trump and Pence will do while they’re in Baton Rouge—or how long they’ll be here—remain scant. An official itinerary was not released.
Richard Carbo, spokesman for Gov. John Bel Edwards, says Trump is welcome in Louisiana, “but not for a photo-op.” Instead, Carbo proposes Trump “consider volunteering or making a sizable donation to the LA Flood Relief Fund to help the victims of this storm.”
Trump said at a rally Thursday that his prayers are with the people affected in Louisiana, “a state that is very special to me.”
