As students returned to class for a new semester at LSU this morning, Harvey—the 11-month old Siberian-Bengal tiger who arrived on campus about a week ago—was officially named Mike VII and released into his habitat.
LSU released several videos on social media this morning of its new live mascot getting acclimated to his new confines—a 15,000-square-foot habitat that recently received $950,000 in enhancements.
The tiger arrived on campus on Aug. 15 and until this morning was quarantined in the night house so that he could be observed by LSU veterinarians to ensure that he is healthy and a good fit for LSU.
“The tiger acclimated well to his new surroundings and was deemed ready to become Mike VII,” LSU says in a press release, adding Mike VII will be released into his yard by 8 a.m. each day and will be brought back in by 8 p.m.
WIth details to come soon, LSU plans to hold a welcome event for Mike VII.
Mike VII was donated to LSU from the Wild at Heart Wildlife Center sanctuary in Okeechobee, Florida. He replaces Mike VI, who was euthanized in October months after being diagnosed with cancer.
