Put on the rally caps: Only two seasons since winning the College World Series, LSU is in danger of missing the postseason. The Tigers might need sweeps of Tennessee at home this weekend and the series at Mississippi State the following weekend to have a realistic chance of getting a berth to the Southeastern Conference tournament. LSU (30-19, 8-16 in SEC) is three games out of the eighth and final spot in the tournament. Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn are tied for the seventh and eighth spots with conference records of 11-13. If the Tigers are able to turn it around and finish strong, but still miss out on an SEC tournament berth, there remains a chance they could wind up in the NCAA tournament field anyway. Five SEC teams have received bids to previous NCAA tournaments without making the SEC’s postseason.
Freshman All-American had transferred to Alabama: Aaron Douglas, an offensive lineman who made the freshman All-American team in 2009 when he was at Tennessee, was found dead Wednesday in Fernandina Beach, Fla. Douglas, who had recently transferred to Alabama, was 21. He left Tennessee early last year after former Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin took the USC job. Douglas played for a season at an Arizona junior college before signing with the Crimson Tide.
All in the timing: Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy says the team will eventually retire Brett Favre’s No. 4. They just want to make sure he’s really retired. “He deserves that for what he did as a Packer,” Murphy told fans in Ashland, Wis., during the team’s annual Tailgate Tour. “But it’s a very, very meaningful honor and we want to do it at a time when it’s meaningful for both him and the organization.” According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Murphy says it would likely be a few years before the ceremony. He said when Favre retired after the 2007 season, they planned a ceremony at the opening game against the Vikings, but then Favre went to play for the Jets. And then he went to Minnesota. Earlier this week, Favre said he has no intention of coming out of retirement.
