LSU defies SEC: A Baton Rouge judge issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, allowing LSU to roster former NFL players and other athletes seeking a fifth college season while the eligibility case continues. Jobs beat forecasts: The U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, far exceeding expectations of 65,000, while unemployment remained low at 4.1% and earlier job figures were revised upward. Hiring was broad-based, led by restaurants and bars, manufacturing, health care, construction and local education, though the information sector, which includes tech and media, lost jobs. The strong report could make the Federal Reserve more likely to raise interest rates, while slowing wage growth and upcoming inflation data remain concerns for consumers. Pump pain: Diesel prices hit a record high as wars in Ukraine and Iran disrupt refineries, creating a global supply crunch and pushing U.S. prices to $5.85 per gallon, up nearly 60% from last year. The disruptions have taken roughly 5 million barrels per day of refining capacity offline. Because diesel powers trucking, agriculture, heating and industry, experts warn the surge will act as a “stealth tax,” raising transportation costs and ultimately driving up prices for goods and services.
