Alabama-based Rock N Roll Sushi will open its first Baton Rouge location in January at 7949 Jefferson Hwy, in the same shopping center as Pearson’s Travel World, and the local franchise owner already has plans to open a second location in the spring.
Owner Chip Burr, who for decades ran all of the Baton Rouge Domino’s locations, is eyeing a location at Perkins Road and Acadian Thruway near Burgersmith for the second restaurant. He says that location will be open in late March.
Burr has sold all 19 of his Domino’s stores. He opened his first Rock N Roll Sushi with a partner in Alabama last year.
“It’s just a really cool concept,” he says. “I liked the atmosphere. I liked what the business was doing.”
Burr says he’s undeterred by Baton Rouge’s crowded sushi market and is confident that the growing brand will succeed in the Capital City.
“There is not an industry more crowded than pizza, and I look at sushi the same way,” Burr says. “I think there’s plenty of room here for all of us, but what makes us unique is we play to our name, Rock N Roll.”
The restaurant’s menus are printed on classic rock album covers. Music videos of rock bands will play while diners eat. Rock N Roll Sushi has a casual atmosphere, Burr says, adding that the restaurant caters to people who enjoy baked and fried rolls, in addition to the traditional sushi and sashimi.
Since first franchising last year, Rock N Roll Sushi now has 14 locations throughout the South. Burr plans to open four or five Baton Rouge Rock N Roll Sushi restaurants by the end of 2017 and to open restaurants in Nashville, Tennessee, and north Texas.
Rock N Roll Sushi’s Jefferson Highway location is in the permitting process, and Burr expects to begin construction next week.
