New Baton Rouge summer collegiate baseball team unveils mascot pick

After several weeks of voting, residents selected a team name for Baton Rouge’s new Texas Collegiate League franchise: The Baton Rouge Rougarou.

The selection comes three months after the TCL, a wood-bat summer league for offseason college players, announced it would create a Baton Rouge team whose season would begin next summer.

In an online poll, Baton Rouge Rougarou won more than 61% of the 3,000 votes cast, beating out the Mighty Flamingos, Red Sticks, Fightin’ Beignets and River Monsters. The team colors will be Rougarou green, black and gray, with the logo featuring the Rougarou holding a bat with the word “Baton Rouge” in a crescent behind.

The Rougarou is a legendary, werewolf-like creature popular in Cajun culture. Team President Uri Gevain, in a prepared statement, said the name also “ties into the local roots of Baton Rouge.”

The team’s season starts May 31 at Pete Goldsby Field in north Baton Rouge. It will play a total of 28 home games for the franchise’s inaugural season in the league. Get tickets here.
