Shortly after Dallas-based Trinity Marine Products announced the closure of its Brusly plant and an anticipated 283 layoffs in late August, West Baton Rouge Parish officials told Daily Report they hoped the company could land a large enough contract to keep the plant open and the workers on the job.

They got their wish today.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission issued a statement today saying Trinity Marine will not be laying off the 283 workers or closing its plant after the company “obtained a contract that will permit the facility to remain open.” The LWC statement does not include details on the nature of the contract. Attempts to reach a Trinity Marine spokesman as of this afternoon’s deadline for further information were unsuccessful.

Trinity, which builds tank, hopper and flat-deck barges for inland and coastal waterways, had planned on closing the plant and enacting the ensuing layoffs on Oct. 23.

“In the past it has occurred where they announced layoffs, received a contract before the layoffs and all is well,” Scott Gaudin, chairman of the West Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce Chairman, told Daily Report shortly after the closure and layoffs were announced on Aug. 26. The company’s Brusly plant also reportedly closed for eight months in 2005, resulting in the termination of 300 workers. The company also laid off 190 workers at the plant in 2009.
