Big money: Overweight and obese people cost the U.S. economy $270 billion annually because of an increased need for medical care and a loss of productivity, according to a new report. The study by the Society of Actuaries says the loss of productivity is caused by excess mortality and disability. The actuaries say they are working with insurance companies to create incentives for customers to lose weight. The study found that 83% of adults would be willing to participate in a health and wellness program if incentivized through their health plan.
Ford Explorer also honored: The Chevrolet Volt has won the 2011 North American Car of the Year award at the Detroit auto show. The Ford Explorer was named Truck of the Year. The awards were announced today, the first day of media previews for the show. Finalists for the car award were the Volt, Hyundai Sonata and Nissan Leaf. Truck finalists were the Dodge Durango, the Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Forty-nine auto journalists from the U.S. and Canada participated in making the picks. The vehicles are judged on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value. Awards are often used by automakers in advertising.
