The Louisiana Legislature will recess today amid coronavirus concerns until March 30 or March 31.
“It’s the right decision,” says House Speaker Pro-tem Tanner Magee, R-Houma.
The decision to recess came only hours after House Speaker Clay Schexnayder, R-Gonzales, said legislators would “soldier on” with the session, The News Star reports.
But pressure to suspend the session continued to mount from health care officials and some lawmakers, prodding leadership to reconsider.
Schexnayder and Senate President Page Cortez, R-Lafayette, will ask members this afternoon to pass a concurrent resolution suspending the session.
“The public health crisis at hand has placed the Legislature in unchartered waters,” Cortez says. “With every decision we make, we are balancing the health and welfare of our citizens, staff and legislators with our constitutional responsibilities. At this time, we believe it is in the best interest of our state to temporarily adjourn the session.” Read the full story.
